Skincare for the active woman: Pretty Athletic review

Hey friends!

Before I move on to the Pretty Athletic review, let me start with a question – where are you from and how’s the weather out there? I’m really curious – tell me in the comments! I hereby agree to sacrifice the comments section and dedicate it as a place for whining about how much we hate cold weather. It can’t be just me?!

Let me tell you, here in Berlin the weather is nothing short of depressing and gloomy. So, just a friendly reminder – if you, like me, are sensitive to the weather change and the extreeeeme lack of sunshine, get yourself some vitamin D3 – either with supplements or through diet. Foods like salmon, shrimp, egg yolks, mushrooms or cod liver oil are all high in vitamin D, so try to incorporate them more in your diet.

Apart from that, another side effect of the greyness outside is visible on my skin as well. The cold dries it out (even more than it already is) and as if that’s not enough – my skin also loses some color and becomes extremely dull. Add the occasional pimple to that and the picture is complete. So.Damn.Annoying!

Well, this year I decided to find a natural solution to all my skin problems. And by “natural” I mean that I wanted to stay away (as much as possible) from any potentially damaging chemicals that “hide” in most cosmetics and which might irritate my skin or clog my pores. I switched to essential oils. So far I’ve loved jojoba and argan oil the most! It works well, I must say, but with a dry skin like mine, I soon realized that it wasn’t enough.

Luckily, I got sent a bunch of Pretty Athletic products to try out and share my experience with you! If you are unfamiliar with them, Pretty Athletic is a skincare brand specifically designed to meet the needs of the active women, promising no gimmicks and products, packed with ingredients that are scientifically proven to work.  

I took my sweet time to test out the product range, especially the Recovery boost: Cell Repair Serum and the Workout Glow: Hyaluronic Vitamin Tonic. Yup, about 2.5 months. Actually, even before I was able to put my hands on them, I was quite intrigued by the brand.  I mean, they are:

1 .Made out of 95% natural ingredients

2.Tailored for the specific skincare needs of the active women

3.Contain no parabens, silicones, sulphates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, plastic microbeads or MI

4. Don’t test on animals

It’s like everything I could wish for in a skincare! Here’s how I incorporated them in my skincare routine:

Pre/Post Workout: Workout Glow: Hyaluronic Vitamin Tonic

I used the Hyaluronic Vitamin Tonic mostly post workout, but often before it as well. I would spray it on my skin and then wipe it off with a cotton pad. It helped me to clean my skin from the sweat and harmful bacteria (trust me, it’s not hard to get it on your face in the gym), while at the same time nourishing it and keeping it hydrated. Since I started using it, I noticed that I was getting less and less red spots and my pores were far less clogged. Before finding out about the Hyaluronic Vitamin Tonic, I would just wash my face with water under the shower and head home. This often left me with dry and flaky skin, especially during the winter months. As you could guess – not a pleasant feeling at all! Fortunately, now with that extra care step, my skin feels smoother and less tingly. Hydration is truly the key to fresh looking skin.

Night time skincare routine

I am notorious for my pedantic night time skincare routine. Ever since I can remember, I’d always, ALWAYS wash my face before bed and put a moisturizer on. Yes, even after coming home from the club in the small hours of the night (not that this happens much anymore LoL). But for that reason, I like to keep it fairly simple.

Make Up Down!

Firstly, if I have make up on, I would take it off with a bit of micellar water or jojoba oil (if I have waterproof mascara on).

Cleanser: Cool Down: Purifying Gel Cleanser

Let’s start with the packaging – I love that it comes with a pump, it makes it so much easier to use. The cleanser has a pretty light, pleasant and kind of herbal smell.  What I love most about it – it doesn’t dry out my skin like most cleansers tend to do. Quite the opposite, it feels very refreshing and soothing.

Moisturizer: Recovery Boost: Cell Repair Serum

This must be my favourite product from the entire line! I apply it on a dry and clean face. It’s designed to soothe and repair the skin from environmental damage and improve your skin’s own barrier. The Serum contains a whole bunch of good stuff like Grapeseed oil, Jasmine, Rose Damascena, Vitamin A, C and E. Despite the oily texture, I found it to be quite lightweight and quick to absorb. Since I started using it, I’ve noticed that overall my skin feels more hydrated and not just right after I apply it. It’s one of the products that I will definitely purchase again.

 

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed all the Pretty Athletics products that I got to try out. In all honesty though, I don’t know if we really need to label products with “sports” or not, as I believe that they can be just as useful for anyone – inside and outside the gym.
